Description
This original lino print depicts South Parade Pier in Southsea and is by the artist Marnie Baker.
The pier first opened to the public in November of 1879 with a spacious pavilion containing two halls, one housed a 1200 seat theatre whilst the other a cafe which also became a dance hall at night.
The pier suffered two fires in recent years, one in 1966 and another in 1974 during the filming of the motion picture 'Tommy'.
At the turn of the last century almost a hundred piers existed around the coast of Britain, nowadays less than half remain, but each stands as a powerful reminder of the achievements of Victorian engineers and the entrepreneurs that built them.

Marnie grew up and still lives just a stone’s throw from the Solent on the south coast in Hampshire. As both an artist and print-maker she is continually inspired by the ever changing sights, smells and sounds of the sea.
The linocut is a printmaking technique similar to that of the woodcut. The image is carved into a block of hessian covered by a thick piece of linoleum and then inked and pressed on paper to create a print. The technique really came into its own after artists like Picasso and Matisse began to work in the medium.
Each one of these limited edition prints is an original work of art and is technically known as an impression. They are supplied ready mounted. Each is individually hand printed, signed and numbered by the artist.
