Quite delicious to look at, the Hump Backed Cowrie (mauritia mauritiana) has a rich chocolate brown colouring with contrasting spots ranging in colour from yellow to off white.
The surface of these naturally shiny shells is smooth to the touch, whilst the underside reveals a long ridged aperture of alternating colour.
Cowries, which are a form of sea snail, are probably one of the most collected of all seashells. The variety of colour and pattern along with their smooth porcelain like finish always attracts a lot of attention.
A quite common species to Indo-Pacific oceans, they are found in shallow waters around coral reefs.
