Natural Gold Mouth Shell

No prizes for guessing how the gold mouth shell acquired its name.

The wonderfully patterned and ridged surface gives way to a attractive yellow gold colour within the opening. The shell is widely used in the jewellery trade as it is a rich source of mother of pearl which is simply exposed by removing the outer layers of the shell.

Gold Mouth Shells (turbo chrysostomus) belong to the Turban (Turbininae) family of some several hundred species and dwell mostly in the tropical shallow waters of the Indo Pacific.
