A delightfully elegant wood carving of a Great Crested Grebe complete with three chicks.
Grebes were once hunted for their ornate feathers and used to be quite a rare sight in Britain and were almost brought to extinction.
Since being protected the population has recovered, to the extent that no inland stretch of water, particularly in the south, is complete without a resident pair.
Also found along the coast in winter, they have an elaborate courtship display; rising out of the water and shaking their heads. Grebe chicks often ride on their parents’ backs.
Beautifully hand carved and painted wood.
