Each seascape vessel is handmade by ceramicist Judy Adams and has been inspired by the marine environment.
Made from stoneware clay the design incorporates tightly coiled handles, swirling wave forms together with aquatic textures and colours. On each there are suggestions of barnacles, shells, pebbles, fish shapes, weed and corals and each also bears the potter’s personal stamp of a small swallow.
While the clay is still soft it is manipulated and textured, painted and sponged with slips and oxides to create the colours and textures of water and the seabed. The interior is glazed with two contrasting colours and fired twice so that the glazes mingle together creating movement and fluidity.
Reflecting the ever changing nature of the sea, each piece is individual in its form, colour and markings and is an eye-catching sculptural form in its own right.
Judy is fascinated by the way in which the sea erodes surfaces by its force, yet can also bind them together with barnacles, shells, weed and sediment. She manipulates the clay using natural objects such as shells, fruit stones, bark and rock to create texture, treating the clay as a canvas to sponge and paint soft shades of sea and sand before firing.
Judy’s work provides continuous visual and textural pleasure as new details are discovered and revealed with each viewing.
