This fine hand carving of a graceful Avocet with its slender upturned bill and striking black and white plumage has been beautifully realised.
Avocets only started to re-colonise our shores towards the end of the twentieth century.
The tiny population continues to expand spreading the species slowly northward. They feed on small invertebrates, which the avocet can sift out of the water by sweeping its bill from side to side.
Simple, elegant decoration beautifully hand carved and painted.
