Australian Pearl Abalone

As with many species of shell the Australian Pearl Abalone reveals an amazing array of glistening colours now the outer layers have been removed and polished.

This beautiful shell of creamy iridescent mother of pearl refracts light between pinks and colourful shades of blue green.

The Australian Abalone (Haliotis Laevigata) occupies a one piece shell and belongs to the large Haliotis family which has in excess of 100 species. Most are edible rock dwelling shells found in both shallow and deeper waters.

It also makes a rather lovely soap dish; it even has its own natural drainage holes.
